After soaking in Brussels's charm, my friends and I packed our backpacks and caught a Flixbus to our next stop: Amsterdam. The journey was smooth and budget-friendly, taking just over three hours to reach Amsterdam Central Station. From there, the real adventure began in one of Europe’s most vibrant and laid-back cities.

We checked into the Flying Pig Downtown Hostel, a backpacker’s haven just a five-minute walk from Amsterdam Central Station. Nestled right in the city's heart, this hostel has everything a traveler could ask for—friendly staff, comfy dorms, great breakfast options, and an unbeatable central location. Whether you're solo or with friends, the chill vibes make this place more than just a bed to crash in—it's part of the Amsterdam experience.

Day 1: Exploring Central Amsterdam

First Impressions, Local Bites and quirky Culture at the Sexmuseum

We wasted no time diving into the local culture. Our first stop was the iconic 420 Café, known for its easygoing vibe and status as one of the city's oldest coffee shops. After soaking in the atmosphere, we walked a few blocks to try the famed Holland fries at Manneken Pis—crispy, golden, and served with mouthwatering sauces. Absolutely unmissable!

Just a short walk away, we stumbled into one of Amsterdam’s most unique attractions—the Sexmuseum (Temple of Venus). Open daily from 10 AM to 6 PM and costing just 10 euros, this museum is packed with bizarre, informative, and hilarious exhibits. It's one of the most visited museums in the Netherlands, and for good reason.

Sunset by the Canals

As the sun dipped low, we wandered through the charming canal-lined streets. The evening air carried the scent of fresh waffles and tulips. Amsterdam’s narrow, colorful houses reflected beautifully on the water, and every corner was photo-worthy. But what truly stood out was the bike culture—bikes outnumber people here! It’s a lifestyle choice that’s both healthy and eco-conscious.

We wrapped up the night sitting beside a peaceful canal with drinks in hand, fully immersed in the city’s mellow spirit.

Day 2: Biking Beyond the Tourist Trail

Into the Green: Het Amsterdamse Bos

After a hearty hostel breakfast, we picked up rental bikes and followed our instincts. A quick scan of Google Maps led us to a massive green oasis on the city’s edge: Het Amsterdamse Bos. The 30-minute ride there was scenic and refreshing. On the way, we passed the historic Olympic Stadium from the 1928 Summer Games—now a venue for sports and concerts.

Once in the park, we parked our bikes by the tranquil Grote Vijver lake and went kayaking. The peaceful water, lush surroundings, and sounds of nature made it a perfect break from the city buzz.

Discovering Amsterdam-Noord

Later that afternoon, we regrouped and boarded a free ferry from behind Amsterdam Central Station to Amsterdam-Noord. The ferry even allows bikes, making the ride hassle-free and scenic.

Across the river, we found a completely different side of the city—quiet, creative, and incredibly photogenic. We admired the striking Anne Frank mural by street artist Eduardo Kobra and explored a graffiti-covered skate park that gave off edgy, underground vibes. It felt like finding a secret version of Amsterdam—calmer, cooler, and way less crowded.

Conclusion: Why Amsterdam Stays With You

Amsterdam isn’t just about tulips and coffee shops—it’s about freedom, creativity, and calm. Whether you’re sipping a drink by the canal, riding through urban forests, or snapping murals across the river, the city leaves you with a sense of peace and excitement. If you're backpacking through Europe, give yourself time here. It might just become your favorite stop.
